Fobus Padle holster for the 1911 with light rail

When I purchased my latest 1911, I chose one that had a light rail for a number of reasons, virtually none of which were for the light rail itself. Because of this, it doesn't fit into your standard holster for a 1911, so I was in the market for something easy and in-expensive.

The Fobus Evolution Paddle holster has surprised me, and i've been pretty happy with it. I firmly believe in having at least one holster for ever piece that I have, so that was the reason for my purchase. However I've found the ease of inserting the paddle, as well as the holsters ability to stay exactly where i put it, even with light shorts (and a belt of course - see the 5.11 Instructors Belt for more info there). The holster does wear some, which seems to protect my firearm from scratches, and i've yet to see any buildup within the open design.

The paddle design has found me picking this holster over others, simply due to the ease of putting it on. The design also allows my other non-light rail 1911s to fit into it very well.

Cons
The first complaint that I have with the holster is that retention is somewhat random. It seems that sometimes when I draw, it slides out easily, and other times, i'm jerking my belt around trying to get the darn thing out. I've loosened the adjustment screw to the point where there is no longer mechanical force being applied by the screw, but that has not eliminated the slightly more difficult draw on some occasions. I'm working on finding the idea draw angle, to reduce this factor on the holster.

The second complaint is that there is no way of securing the saftey or putting something inbetween the hammer and the firing pin. It is easy, when cocked and locked to dis-engage the safety while it is still in the holster. Although a few other things would have to fail at that point for a fire, Murphy is usually pretty good at getting you when you are least prepared. That said, i realize that this holster was most likely designed more for competition, rather than real world carry.

I find it perfect for around the house, using the Israeli Carry method, rather than cocked and locked.
